Most cat owners don't think much about their cat's water intake — until there's a problem. But chronic dehydration is surprisingly common in cats, and it's quietly linked to some of the most serious feline health issues, including kidney disease and urinary tract infections. The good news? A few simple changes can make a big difference.
Why Cats Are Prone to Dehydration
Cats evolved as desert animals. Their wild ancestors got most of their moisture from prey, not from drinking. This means domestic cats have a naturally low thirst drive — they simply don't feel the urge to drink as often as dogs or humans do.
If your cat eats mostly dry kibble, they're getting very little moisture from their food (dry food is only about 10% water, compared to 70–80% in wet food). That gap has to be made up somewhere — and many cats just don't drink enough to compensate.
Signs Your Cat May Be Dehydrated
Watch out for these warning signs:
- Dry or tacky gums
- Lethargy or reduced activity
- Sunken eyes
- Loss of skin elasticity (gently pinch the skin at the scruff — it should spring back immediately)
- Reduced urination or very dark, concentrated urine
- Loss of appetite
If you notice several of these signs, a vet visit is the right call. Dehydration can escalate quickly in cats.
How Much Water Does a Cat Need?
A general guideline is about 50ml of water per kilogram of body weight per day. So a 4kg cat needs roughly 200ml daily. But this varies based on diet, activity level, age, and health status. Cats on wet food diets naturally need to drink less.
How to Get Your Cat to Drink More Water
1. Try a Cat Water Fountain
This is the single most effective change most cat owners can make. Cats are instinctively attracted to moving water — in the wild, still water is more likely to be stagnant and unsafe. A flowing fountain triggers that instinct and encourages cats to drink more frequently.
Our Magnetic Cat Water Fountain uses a quiet pump to keep water circulating, and the magnetic design makes it easy to clean — one of the biggest barriers to keeping a fountain hygienic. It's a favourite among cats who ignore their water bowl entirely.
If you prefer a gravity-fed option, the Gravity Cat Water Dispenser Stand keeps a steady supply of fresh water available without electricity, which is great for cats who are sensitive to noise.

2. Place Water Away from Food
In the wild, cats instinctively avoid water sources near their prey (to prevent contamination). Many cats will drink more if their water bowl is in a different room from their food bowl. Try placing a bowl in a quiet corner of the bedroom or bathroom.
3. Use Multiple Water Stations
More bowls in more places means more opportunities to drink. Put one on each floor of your home, or wherever your cat spends the most time. Some cats have a favourite spot — let them lead.
4. Choose the Right Bowl
Cats can be surprisingly fussy about their bowls. Wide, shallow bowls are generally preferred because they don't press against a cat's sensitive whiskers (a phenomenon called whisker fatigue). Ceramic or stainless steel bowls are better than plastic, which can harbour bacteria and affect the taste of the water.
5. Keep Water Fresh
Change the water at least once a day. Cats can detect even slight changes in water quality and will avoid a bowl that smells stale. If you use a fountain, clean it weekly and replace the filter regularly.
6. Add Wet Food to Their Diet
Even replacing one dry meal a day with wet food significantly increases your cat's overall moisture intake. You can also add a small amount of low-sodium chicken broth to their water as an occasional treat — many cats find it irresistible.
A Note on Kidney Health
Kidney disease is one of the most common conditions in older cats, and chronic dehydration is a major contributing factor. Keeping your cat well-hydrated throughout their life is one of the most impactful things you can do for their long-term health. It's a small habit with a big payoff.
The Bottom Line
Cats won't always drink enough on their own — it's just not in their nature. But with the right setup (a good fountain, multiple water stations, and a diet with some wet food), you can make staying hydrated easy and appealing for them.
